Five people injured in Disneyland Paris ride accident.

Five people were injured, one seriously, after an accident on the Big Thunder Mountaintan roller coaster at Disneyland Paris yesterday.

An element of decorative rockwork is reported to have come loose, striking guests riding the Frontierland mine train roller coaster. Five injuries are now confirmed, including one guest “seriously” injured — a 38-year old man who was apparently struck on the head by the resin element and has been taken to Beaujon hospital in Clichy-sur-Seine (Hauts-de-Seine) with a head injury.

Initial reports had suggested this was merely a precautionary measure and a spokesperson later appeared to downplay the seriousness of the injury in a statement given to the AFP, clearly stating it was not life-threatening.

According to Le Parisien, his family will be accommodated and looked after by Disneyland Paris for the duration of his stay in hospital. The four other guests, with only minor injuries, were treated on the spot and returned to the park.

It is understood that the incident happened when a wood and fibreglass section of the structure inside one of the tunnels fell on one of the railway wagons.   The tunnel section is described as "imitating an underground earthquake", with rocks falling toward the cars.

The attraction remains closed until further notice pending a full investigation.

Winnie the Pooh returns to the Hundred Acre Wood this weekend

Walt Disney Animation Studios returns to the Hundred Acre Wood with “Winnie the Pooh,” the first big-screen Pooh adventure from Disney animation in more than 35 years which open in the UK on Friday 15 April 2011.

With the charm, wit and whimsy of the original featurettes, this all-new movie reunites audiences with the philosophical “bear of very little brain” and friends Tigger, Rabbit, Piglet, Kanga, Roo-and last, but certainly not least, Eeyore, who has lost his tail. “Well a tail is either there or it isn’t there,” said Pooh. “And yours isn’t. there.”

Owl sends the whole gang on a wild quest to save Christopher Robin from an imaginary culprit. It turns out to be a very busy day for a bear who simply set out to find some hunny. Inspired by five stories from A.A. Milne’s books in Disney’s classic, hand-drawn art style.

Tokyo Disneyland Reopening Details

Reopening Date: 15 April 2011

Operating Hours: 8:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m.

Ticket Prices: Regular prices

For each guest admitted to the Park through 14 May 2011, 300 yen will be donated to the Japanese Red Cross Society toward the relief and recovery of the disaster-affected areas.

The operating conditions of the Park may change without prior notice depending on the situation of the power supply at the time. Also, some facilities may be temporarily closed for regular inspections or for minor earthquake-related repairs.

Power-Saving Efforts

A number of efforts are being made to conserve electricity in the Disney theme park operations, as follows:

Shortened Park Operating Hours:

Usually at this period of the year, the Parks are open until 10:00 p.m. However, in an effort to save power, Tokyo Disneyland will close at 6:00 p.m. for the time being.

Reducing the Use of Park Equipment:

Indoor and outdoor lighting in the Park will be reduced, but without compromising the safety of our guests. Also, the use of escalators and water fountains will be restricted, the temperature of air conditioning units will be adjusted, and electric hand dryers in the restrooms will be turned off.

Conservation Efforts in the Offices:

Efforts are being made in the back offices to conserve energy, such as reducing lighting in the offices, lobbies and corridors; adjusting the temperature of air conditioning units; suspending the use of electric hand dryers in the restrooms; limiting the use of elevators, etc.

Implementation of generators is currently being studied as one measure to cover possible power shortages.

Disney breaks ground on Shanghai Disneyland

The Walt Disney Company broke ground today on the latest Disney theme park with a ceremony at Shanghai Disneyland.  The Park which is a joint venture with the  Shanghai government is due to open in 2016.

Speaking at the ceremony, which included gold-toned shovels and Disney characters dressed in traditional Chinese outfits, CEO Bob Iger said the park would be both “authentically Disney and distinctly Chinese”.

Bob Iger was joined by senior representatives of the Shanghai and Chinese government, who said the Disney resort would help raise the city’s profile as an international tourist destination.

Disney has spent over a decade getting government approval for the project, which will include a theme park covering 910,000 square metres.  The resort  which will including hotels, a lake and outside recreation facilities totalling 3.9 square kilometres.

Shanghai Disneyland will be Disney’s second Chinese park, following Hong Kong Disneyland which opened in 2005.

The Walt Disney Company will own 43 per cent of the new resort and will contribute an equivalent amount of financing, with 57 per cent coming from the state-owned Shanghai Shendi group.

Mr Iger said Disney also planned to invest in movie production in China, producing films that are “made in China, by the Chinese, for the local market, but Disney branded”.

Latest Disney Store UK Pin Trading News

Disney Store UK has released a statement with regards to the future of Pin Trading  at it's UK stores and has launched a survey to gather feed back from traders and collectors in the UK.

Dear Disney UK Pin Traders and Collectors,

We know that in recent months there has been much speculation regarding the future of Disney Pins being sold in UK Disney Stores and at disneystore.co.uk. We can confirm that Disney Store UK intends to continue offering Disney Pins for sale.

Much of this speculation has come about from the declining announcements regarding upcoming releases. In addition, some distribution and systems issues have caused some erratic Pin availability on recent releases. Please accept a big Disney apology from us all here at the Disney Store for any problems or delays caused in obtaining recent Pin releases.

As most of you know, Disney Store UK has been selling Pins for over two years now. We have seen many great Pin designs covering a wide variety of Disney characters and films. We have had some Pins that sold out very quickly and some are still around today. We have enjoyed a mix of edition sizes, along with some real gems, like the Sword Series.

Although in total, Disney Pins are only a very small part of the offering at Disney Store, we are committed to maintaining availability of Pins going forward. However, the time has come to review our approach to ensure we can give it the right level of focus alongside all the other great products we develop for our Stores and our Online Store.

Until we finalise our longer term strategy, which will take a few months, we would like to share some key points to look out for in the short term. Keep in mind, that once we have finalised our strategy, it takes many months to design, manufacture and distribute the new Pins.

• We are discontinuing our Core Pin range after the Nala and Stitch on a bike release. We will then continue with Limited Edition Pins.

• We will release one new Limited Edition Pin instore and online every two weeks for the foreseeable future. In addition, we will release one Online Exclusive Limited Edition Pin every 6 weeks.

• We have announced the first of our new limited Edition Pins (‘101 50th Anniversary’ and an Online Exclusive with ‘Ratigan’ from Basil The Great Mouse Detective.

• We will continue to advertise new releases two weeks in advance within this Pin section on disneystore.co.uk.

• The future of Pin Trading in our Stores is still under review and we will share details at a later stage. Although we have no more Lanyard Pins in production at this time, we have not ruled out further production once we agree a future plan for Pin Trading. We have some designs already prepared if we move forward.

As a ‘sneak peek’, some of the upcoming releases include a fantastic new ‘Jasmine in the hour-glass’ and our first ‘Rapunzel’. There is also a great Pocahontas Pin, which will please many of you. Keep checking disneystore.co.uk for the latest Pinformation.

Finally, to help us have the best possible information when finalising our strategy in the coming months, we invite you to complete the Pin Survey below. This will be invaluable information for us. Thank you all for your continued support and passion for Disney Pins.
